Oh Snap!

May 5, 2016

Today we are going to talk about something near and dear to our hearts…Snapchat filters. Ah yes, Snapchat filters. They’re the reason I wake up in the morning excited and eager to start the day. It’s like a special, little-known secret we carry around in our pockets.

Are you fighting with your significant other? Did a beloved pet just pass away? That’s okay! Just whip out your handy dandy smartphone, go to Snapchat, and behold! Your head is now a giant tomato spawning much smaller tomatoes. Isn’t life worth living now? You’re welcome.

They’re not only good for ignoring the pain in your life, they can also be used for some SWEET profile pictures. A personal favorite of mine is the dog filter. They’re also great for giving the option for extremely natural looking makeup. Perfect for Snapchatting that special someone.

Another special quality that adds to the zest of the app is when people post selfies on their story. It serves as a constant reminder that yes, they’re still just as cute as the last selfie you saw 10 seconds ago, and yes, different filters really do make each picture more exciting than the last.

Needing a quick buck? Try their new and not very widely known feature called SnapCash. That’s right! Attach your credit card information and behold! You just prevented your friends from going into crippling debt.

According to sophomore Lydia Rector, it has made her life much simpler. “I have always wanted to send my money to my friends, and now I can!” So while her friends are off spending Lydia’s hard earned cash, Lydia is poor and at home. You’re a good friend, Lydia.

You can also “FaceChat” your pals on the app now. Instead of using Skype or FaceTime, you can use a slow, laggy feature from an app that is not designed for that purpose. But have no fear! The slow and pixilated picture adds suspense! Is the app going to crash? What has my friend been trying to say for the last 15 minutes? Is she okay? Is it really frozen or are they playing a fun prank on me?  The possibilities are endless!

When you think about it, I mean, when you really sit down and think about Snapchat, you finally come to the realization that it symbolizes so much more than just sending pictures of the ceiling to the person you like because you haven’t washed your hair in five days. It’s about connection. It’s about snapping that person you haven’t spoken to in years and type, “Hey, what’s up,” and that is the true human experience.
