Terror in London

March 24, 2017

London police had identified Khalid Masood as the instigator of the terrorist attack on Parliament that occurred on Wednesday, March 22nd. The fifty-two-year-old drove his car into a crowd of pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, effectively killing two individuals and injuring over twenty people – seven of which remain in critical condition. Masood later stabbed and killed an officer with a knife while trying to enter Parliament before being shot by the police. Mashood is one of the four people that died in the attack. The two pedestrians killed consisted of a U.S. tourist, Kurt Cochran, celebrating his 25th anniversary with his wife, and Aysha Frade, a teacher and mother of two. The police officer was identified as PC Keith Palmer, 48, who had been in the service of the parliamentary and diplomatic protection service – as well as a husband and a father.

London Metropolitan Police said that though “Masood was not the subject of any current investigations and there was no prior intelligence about his intent to mount a terrorist attack.” He did indeed have a criminal record for various offences such as assault, possession of offensive weapons among others. Masood was British born and thought to be inspired by Islamic ideology.

Prime Minister Theresa May gave a speech Wednesday evening in which she stated that  “The terrorist chose to strike at the heart of our capital city, where people of all nationalities, religions and cultures come together to celebrate the values of liberty, democracy and freedom of speech, but let me make it clear today, as I have had cause to do before, any attempt to defeat those values through violence and terror is doomed to failure.”

ISIS has already claimed responsibility for the attack, though this statement remains unverified as the Islamic State has offered no proof for its involvement.
