How To Stay Safe When Walking Alone

December 3, 2019

Walking by yourself, especially at night, can be frightening and even dangerous. It is almost inevitable that at some point, most people will have to walk by themselves. Here are a few tips that will help you be safe when you’re walking alone…

  1. First and foremost, walk with confidence and purpose when you are out alone. Keep your head up and don’t be afraid to make eye contact with people you pass. Walk facing traffic to keep yourself visible. If you get lost, do not wander aimlessly. Keep your pace steady and head for the nearest store or restaurant to ask for directions.
  2. It can be helpful to have something on your keychain, in your purse, or in your wallet that makes noise; a whistle, for example, might come in handy. If someone harasses you or tries to grab you, make as much noise as possible to alert anyone around you.
  3. Avoid rows of parked cars, alleys, and unlit streets. These are spots that are hard to see other people in, and for other people to see you. It is always best to stay visible and in well-lit areas.
  4. Carry some sort of protection with you in case of an emergency. Pepper spray, keys, and tasers can all be helpful if you are attacked.

Of course, it is always best to walk with a friend. If you have to walk alone though, use these tips to help you feel and stay safe.
