Cheer Year 2020/2021 Comparison

April 13, 2021

On July 8th, 2020 the MHS cheer team had to make tryouts a little different. With 2020 being the year of  Covid, procedures for trying out and practicing for sports were very different. While learning everything the girls were sent all the material on a google classroom and had to learn it at home by themselves.  The procedure for the 2020 tryouts was the girls that were trying out had to be put in groups of 4. There were specific time slots for each group. Starting with the first group trying out at 4:00 pm and the last group trying out at 6:00 pm. There were 13 groups that tried out in the span of 2 hours.

When we started trying out we had to walk into the building with our mask on and take our mask off and put them in 4 separate chairs. We each had a specific X on the ground we had to stand on to be spaced out. Trying out only took 10 minutes. During the tryout, we had to do a cheer, chant the school song, and four specific jumps that were given to us. This was about the only normal thing about tryouts. When the tryout was done, we had to grab our mask and leave. The girls had to go home and waited for an announcement on who made what team. Coach Cheatham posted them online, usually, she posted them at the high school and we came into town and saw them on the front doors. With Covid, there were a lot of things that were different.

For this year, we are having a new set of cheer tryouts. These will happen on April 12, 13, and 14.  The first two days we go to the high school to learn and practice the material.  All material is learned on the first day, with the second day designated for practicing everything.  The 14th is the actual tryouts. We are going to be in groups again and try out which makes the tryouts this year and a little bit are similar to the tryout last year.

However, the tryouts are very different. With 2020, we had to be very cautious with being in the same room for a long period of time. We had to self-teach the material to ourselves. With 2021 we are still cautious but just a little less than last year. With learning the material we are going to be taught in a 2 day time period by someone else, much like the years before we were taught in person with a 2 day period. The coach is trying to make things seem normal compared to last year.

With cheerleading in 2020, we did not have a summer clinic, cheer camp, or winter clinic. Most of the events we normally do were canceled on the spot because of covid. This year our goal is to go to ball state for NCA camp. The 2021 team is going to move on from the 2020 year and the team is going to improve and do great things..
