Rating Met Gala Outfits

October 18, 2021

New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted the annual Met Gala on September 13, 2021. One of the most highly-anticipated fashion events of the year, the Met Gala was filled with dozens of spectacular and not-so-spectacular outfits. With its 2021 theme of “American independence,” the Met Gala attendees awed Americans with a plethora of different attires.

Today, I’ll be rating a handful of these outfits on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being me hating the outfit and 10 being me loving it. My intention is not to insult or bash anyone; this is just my opinion!

Quannah Chasinghorse – 9/10

She really understood the assignment given; this outfit incorporates the theme with style wonderfully. The makeup, piercings, and jewelry are gorgeous. I wish the bottoms had something else to them, though, like an intricate pattern or maybe even a bit of turquoise.

Anok Yai – 10/10

This might be my favorite look of the whole night. The black and white colors are giving me Old Hollywood vibes, more specifically, the elegance of 1920s fashion. The dress is beautiful and the jacket adds a nice, new texture to it.

Vera Wang – 3/10

This outfit disappointed me, honestly; I’m not a fan of the shorts because they look too much like athletic shorts. However, I feel like the top is the main reason for my distaste. It’s too plain, and I think it would look better if it was connected to the shorts, like a flowy silk jumper. I love the thigh-high socks/boots, though, and the white veil/skirt is gorgeous.

Kim Kardashian – 5/10

I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it. The tight, all-black look reminds me a bit too much of a black morph suit that kids wear on Halloween. However, nobody was sure that it was Kim Kardashian when she first entered, and the mysterious vibe the outfit radiated intrigued the audience.

Iman – 10/10

I am absolutely speechless. That’s all I have to say for this one.

Channing Tatum – 2/10

I see too many guys just wearing plain black suits to fashion events. Throw in a different material, color, or something of the sort; be more creative!

Timothée Chalamet – 7/10

Finally, a man wearing a more interesting suit! It’s not over-the-top, but it looks exceptional, even if the color scheme is a bit plain. The jacket and pants remind me of colonial American fashion in a way, and the off-white Converse shoes tie the whole look together.

Billie Eilish – 9/10

Billie Eilish made jaws drop in this peach-colored gown paired with dainty jewelry. She hit the target spot on with this look; the theme was achieved with a Marilyn Monroe-esque look, and she looked stunning. The only reason this isn’t a 10/10 is that I feel like the color of the dress washes out her skin tone.

Olivia Rodrigo – 6/10

I was looking forward to Olivia Rodrigo’s Met Gala outfit since I love the outfits she wears at performances and in posts on social media, but I’m not loving this look. I like the jewelry, black lace, and the top, but I don’t like the way the bottoms look. I wish the jumpsuit went down to her feet, and that the bottoms were a skirt of the same material the top is made of.

Grimes – 9/10

The gown is beautiful; the intricate patterns catch your eye right away, and the ombré towards the bottom of the skirt is perfect. I’m getting lots of futuristic vibes here, and the sword is awesome.

Addison Rae – 3/10

Yes, red is a “patriotic” color, but this dress is too simple for the Met Gala. It also looks nearly identical to the iconic Tom Ford dress Kourtney Kardashian wore at her Christmas party in 2019. It’s a nice dress, but we’ve already seen it before and it didn’t grab my attention.

Ella Emhoff 8/10

Now, this is a well-executed red look. It might be a basic color used to incorporate the theme, but it looks amazing; the different shades of red and the contrasting top and bottoms really make it pop. This outfit is bold but in the best way possible.

Marcus Samuelsson (right) – 1/10

I actually quite enjoy the suit/skirt combo, but the mixture of patterns and the hat do not mix well.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello – 4/10

I liked the spin on the traditional suit Shawn Mendes wore; it’s not my favorite suit of the whole night, but it is creative. Camila Cabello, on the other hand, did not impress me. The color of her dress is gorgeous, but it looks too much like a tacky early 2000s prom dress for me.

Lil Nas X – 10/10

Lil Nas X did not disappoint at his first Met Gala; all three looks are incredible, and he definitely stole the show.

Nikkie de Jager – 10/10

Not only did Nikkie de Jager look ethereal in this cyan flower dress, but she also paid homage to one of the most prominent LGBTQ+ advocates, Marsha P. Johnson. Keep an eye out for a full story on this look by writer Quincee Collier!
