From Oldies to Trendy

May 12, 2022

Many unique trends have cycled through the past decades. However, some of these “out of style” trends have made a comeback! Trends have been a variety of things, like cars, clothes, hairstyles, toys, phones, music, makeup, activities, slang, etc. Here are some examples of things that were popular in the past years!

70s

The 70s are well known as the “hippie retro era.” Known for its groovy funky styles, being vibrant and bold, especially when it comes to patterns, surely made this decade one to remember!

It included graphic spirals and flowers wallpaper, hag rugs, mustaches, late-night disco, full-color photographs in magazines, soulful tunes, and graphic designs. Some popular clothing items back then were, bell bottoms, flowy, and flared fitted pants.

80s

The 80s aesthetic was and still is, defined by bright colors, bold print, big hair, clashing shades, and prints. This decade featured fast music, sporty cars, and TVs. The hair that was in style was perms, big bangs, big curls, big feathers, mullets, and side ponytails.

Clothes were spandex, cut-off sweatshirts, skin-tight leggings, jeans with ripped knees, and lacey shirts. Frills on bedtime gowns, button-up shirts, and T-shirts. Leg warmers and high-waisted jeans or now commonly referred to as mom jeans were also trendy.

Neon colors were everywhere in the 80s. Especially at the skating rink during the black light skate. Bright colors like purple, baby blue, pink, and yellow were also present in many eyeshadows!

90s

The 90s clothes had fluorescent colors on sweatpants, parachute pants, and jackets. The most popular clothing colors were blue, green, orange, pink, and yellow. Women wore crop tops, baby-doll dresses over leggings, black leather jackets, and colored or embroidered jeans. Animal prints and bright colors were also popular.

This decade also featured wide-leg jeans, tracksuits, bomber jackets, gold chains, and snapback hats. The 90s looks were grunge, preppy, punk, and hip-hop.

Outfits for men included bright t-shirts, denim overalls, colored jeans, striped sweaters, and leather or letterman jackets, with slouch socks and sneakers. Bold prints, sports jerseys, graphic t-shirts, leather jackets, and velvet blazers were also common.

2000s

The Y2K aesthetic sure was something. The fashion that was in style was cowl-neck black tops, knee-length stonewash denim skirts, chokers, crochets, body chains, rhinestones, baguette bags, snakeskin prints, and platform sandals.

Denim was also a staple for men and women. From jeans to shirts, jackets, and hats. Other trendy items were low-rise flared jeans, cargo pants, daisy dukes, and off-the-shoulder tops.

Comebacks?!

Although many of these clothes have been trends, only some came back.

From the 70s, the flowy and flared fits, crochet clothing, halter tops, flared bottoms, and knotted tops have made returns to the present! Ripped and distressed jeans, paired with polished blazers and blouses from the 8’s are thriving again!

The 90s comebacks are slip dresses, kitten heels, Statement earrings, Cropped tops, Wide-leg bottoms, and Corsets! Low-rise jeans, big belts, and bags are coming back from the 2000s.
