The Color Red

November 30, 2022

I hate the color red.

A color that symbolizes failure. I dread getting papers back because I fear I will see marks in that grim color.

I hate the color red.

The color that is seen splattered across streets. The color that is seen smeared along lockers.

I hate the color red… I think. Do I hate the color red? Or is it easier to blame the color red than it is to blame the murderers? Is it easier to blame the color red than it is to acknowledge that the system is flawed? Is it easier to blame the color red than it is to admit to myself that I received those red marks because I didn’t try hard enough?

I claim to hate the color red, but the color red has done nothing to me. The color red is my mom’s favorite color, actually. My sister looks beautiful in the color red. The autumn leaves fall in the most delicate shade of red. My best friend’s hair is a gorgeous kind of red.

I love the color red.
