Feminism and the Wage Gap

March 15, 2016

Type “wage gap” in Google and look at the first search suggestion it gives you. This is what appears on your screen:“Wage gap myth”. Current day feminism is like a snowball of beliefs that turn out not to be true, and now it’s too big of a thing to stop as it rolls downhill (like some other things) ready to careen into us all.

Each year, statistics come out about earnings, and people are constantly comparing how much they earn to how much others earn. Women will compare how much they earn compared to men, and if their number is lower, the whole world turns upside down. There are reasons why their numbers are lower, and no, it’s not bCadeecause the government is controlled by sexist white male pigs.

Sometimes you have to look past the numbers and think with some reason. Women don’t get paid less than men. Women may seek different careers than men. Women may take off more time than men. If you would rather watch a video than read, watch this woman explain why feminists have been wrong all along and this generation of feminism needs to correct the previous generation’s mistakes.

When you think of a high paying job, what do you think of? For me, I think of a doctor. Then think of a doctor; what gender do you think of? I think of a male. Now you may be saying, “Hey, that’s stereotyping.”

Well let me explain.

Yes, stereotyping CAN be a bad thing, but stereotypes are usually formed by years of repetition. Doctors have always been a field dominated by men. A 2014 census by the Federation of State Medical Boards found that 66% of physicians were male. It’s not stereotyping if it is true. If women are upset that there are more male doctors, then they should be upset at themselves for not following that career and getting paid more. It is nobody’s fault…except their own.

There is also a belief that even if they are in the same career, men still end up getting paid more than women. Well, according to Folio’s 2015 Advertising Sales Salary Survey, women out earn men in every level of sales jobs. Women out earned men from $300 at the director level, up to $8,600 more for female account executives.  Why do women make more than men in this instance? Do bosses in the sales industry perceive their female employees more important than their male employees? Is it because they are more attractive and can use that to sell more? Why aren’t feminists complaining about equality in the sales field?  Feminists will see a statistic where men make more in a certain field and a whole myth will be made up, but if they see an instance where women make more, they’ll look over it.

There are reasons why men make more in certain fields. Sometimes women get pregnant and they decide to take time off to take care of the baby more often than men do. It’s not a man’s fault that he does not give birth. Do not point your fingers at us.

According to ABC news, women are 46% more likely to call in sick for a few days than men. Also, for some fields such as doctors, women will go into the lower paying specialties, such as pediatrics and family medicine while men dominate the higher paying specialties such as cardiology Bryerand anesthesiology.

Think about this for a second. How do you expect to make more money than someone if you work fewer hours and work a lower paying job?

You can’t.

Feminists need to think reasonably about problems, and not just point the finger at whoever they want. You can’t just expect to get equal rights by doing less work. The way you prove the statistics wrong is by working for it. Instead of complaining about all the rights it seems they do not have, feminists need to start realizing, and appreciating, the equality they do have. Women in the United States have so many more rights than women around the world, and for that to go to waste is just like a slap in the face to those women. Here in America, women are able to get an education, a job, and just live a life without being controlled by anybody.

Women can live the same life of any man in America, and if that is not equality, then nothing is.

I have to say that I don’t agree with this article, but mainly not because of the excuses used for the alleged wage gap. I feel that the way all the facts, opinions, over-generalizations, and closed off definitions of “feminists” are given is not journalism-worthy. The way this is written makes feminists out to be whiny, griping, little girls who complain about things that they want to be given to them because they’re women and they don’t want to work for them (and i have to say, that completely goes against what feminism is really about). And not only does the article present the ideas in a clearly biased way (and it has to be pretty bad for something to offend me, but the bias and rude judgement within it offended me), but it also solely focuses on a wage gap within America, which doesn’t even begin to cover what feminists stand for. That is the least of our worries. Feminism also isn’t just about fighting for women’s rights, but because in a lot of places women fall into the oppressed category, many people think that feminism is only here for them and that they believe females deserve to be above males.
What feminism is really about is having equal rights. Everywhere. For everyone. The US is a much more equality-based nation than most in the world, so getting equal rights between all genders and races in this country is not a top priority. What true feminism focuses on is gaining the rights in all countries between males, females, transgenders, cisgenders, gender fluids, blacks, whites, Asians, Latinos, gays, straights, bisexuals, rich, poor, and middle class and any other categories you can put people into. It’s about fighting for the right for girls to go to school in Nepal, where about 10% of women are literate, and Afghanistan, where girls who are brave enough to go so school are continually threatened and attacked on the way. It’s about fighting for the equal treatment of LGBT people in some Middle Eastern countries, where people are being imprisoned and killed for their sexuality. It’s about fighting for the freedom of 12- to 16-year-old girls in South Sudan and India who are being forced and sold into marriages at this second and who die during pregnancy or childbirth because their bodies can’t handle the toll of carrying a child in their undeveloped bodies.
Feminism is about fighting for equal rights for others, not just women, and not just for a destruction of a difference between wages in such a highly developed and democratic country. Feminism is about much more than that.

I hope I didn’t sound too rude or insulting. I just wanted to present my side on the matter.

The issue with feminism is that it is a beast with thousands of different heads. You say it’s a group about equality. But we just see people wrongly accusing something of being sexist and flame it until ithe gets taken down. I don’t see mainstream feministso beat an eye towards oppression in the Middle East and Africa, no. Manspreading is much more important.

Anyway it is (same with race and gender )full of double standards that are emmensley unfair against the other party that peopl claim to be “misogynists.” It’s as if feminists don’t even know there OWN points. For example, some feminista say men can’t be feminists, some do. Some of them want men to die and be castrated, some dont. It’s a massive mess and is a pointless movement.

There are laws against the wage gap, and women in the western world can do.as they please. Now let’s tackle this issue somewhere else instead of complaining about 1st world problems.
